Het betreft een bijzonder historisch vaartuig dat in opdracht van de Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NSM) als directievaartuig werd gebouwd bij de eveneens in Amsterdams gevestigde Scheepswerf 't Kromhout D. Goedkoop Jr.. Na de oplevering kwam het schip in de vaart onder de naam Scheepsbouw I. In 1951 werd de naam gewijzigd in Shipdock I, naar aanleiding van de voortzetting van de werfactiviteiten onder de naam Nederlandsche Droogdok- en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NDSM). Het schip is uitgerust met een karakteristieke Kromhout-dieselmotor, een passende installatie die uitstekend aansluit bij de historische achtergrond van het vaartuig. Het interieur van de voorwoning is in het verleden vernieuwd, waarbij veel aandacht is besteed aan een sfeervolle afwerking die recht doet aan het karakter van het schip.
