How to find your dream boat among the listings
Choosing the yacht of your dreams starts with an important step: clearly identifying how and where you want to sail.
When orienting yourself, the following points will help you along:
- Boat type. There are various types of vessels, each suited for different kinds of use. Agile models such as tenders or speedboats are ideal for short trips and recreational cruising. Larger models, like cruisers or motor yachts, offer more comfort and amenities for longer journeys. That’s why it’s important to determine your intended use so you can select the right type.
- Sailing area. Inland waters require different hull shapes, drafts, and stability than open water or coastal regions. If you want to sail at sea, the boat must be seaworthy and meet specific requirements. So think carefully in advance about where you prefer to sail.
- Company on board. Do you usually sail with family or friends and need extra space, or do you mostly go solo and prefer a compact, agile model? If you plan to stay aboard for longer periods, it’s important to pay attention to the number of berths and the layout of the boat.
- Budget. Besides the purchase price, annual costs also play a role, such as mooring fees, maintenance, and insurance. Keep these in mind when making your final decision.

-
When should I choose a sailing boat and when a motorboat?
The choice depends on your experience, sailing style, and the type of trip you typically want to make. Sailing boats are sportier and sleeker, often require more experience, and are mainly suited for large lakes or open sea. They are ideal for those who enjoy long journeys on the water. Motorboats are often more maneuverable, easier to learn to handle, and suitable for shorter trips or recreational use.

Do I need to register my boat?
Registering your boat is not mandatory, but it is wise. Both new and used boats can be registered in the national ship register of the Kadaster. This officially records ownership, which provides certainty in cases such as ownership disputes, recovery after theft, or selling the boat.
-
Do I need a boating license to buy a boat?
No, you generally do not need a boating license to purchase a boat. If you want to operate it and the boat exceeds 20 km/h or is longer than 15 meters, then you must have a boating license.
-
How much maintenance does a yacht require?
This depends on the type of boat and the materials. For example, a wooden boat requires more maintenance than a polyester or aluminum vessel. In all cases, you can count on annual engine servicing and winterization.
-
What are the annual costs of owning a boat?
Annual costs vary depending on the type of boat and how intensively you use it. Those who sail frequently generally face higher fuel and maintenance costs than those who only go out occasionally.
In addition to the purchase price, consider mooring fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and winter storage. It is wise to create a cost overview in advance so you understand what to expect.
-
Can I personalize the yacht with boat accessories?
Yes, certainly! In most cases, yachts can be expanded with accessories. HISWA companies are happy to advise you on the possibilities and provide professional installation.
