The Lemsteraak is perfect for shallow waters
The Lemsteraak is a pleasure yacht that is often used for shallow inland waters: think of canals, lakes and ponds. This is because the ship is part of the flat-bottom family.
As a flat-bottomed ship, the ship has little draft, which allows it to sail in places where sailing ships cannot go. In addition, it has the unique ability to run aground.
Lemsteraak Visserman
The Lemsteraak Visserman is a well-known and robust version of the ship, and looks like you are looking at the past. Don't let that distract you: the ship is still made today. It is characterized by its dark colors, large sails and smooth position on the water.
The Visserman has sleeping quarters on board for up to four people. In addition, the large versions, sixteen meters, are suitable for sailing competitions. You steer the ship with several people. Other types are the Lemsteraak Yacht version and the Cabin version.
Built since the 19th century
The Lemsteraak has been built since the end of the 19th century. The first one of which drawings still exist was made in 1876 by the De Boer shipyard in Lemmer. It is an improved version of the Frisian eel barge.
At that time it was not yet a pleasure yacht: it was used for fishing in the Wadden Sea and (then) the Zuiderzee. It mainly served as a cargo boat, for example to transport large loads of mussels and herring. It was given a wooden flat bottom to make it suitable for the shallow Frisian waters.
That choice also ensured that it became popular as a pleasure yacht at the time, and the design and construction adapted to this. The bun was replaced by a cabin, often decorated with stained glass and wood carvings. Since 2002, the Lemsteraak has also been used for competitive sailing.
